Social Media Democracies
Welcome to Social Media Democracies. The Internet revolution has lead to the ability of people to connect with each other. This newfound “people power” has lead to the development of bottom-up systems of power replacing top-down autocratic systems – across both politics and commerce.
The term Social Media refers to the use of web-based and mobile technologies to turn communication into an interactive dialogue. Andreas Kaplan and Michael Haenlein define social media as “a group of Internet-based applications that build on the ideological and technological foundations of Web 2.0, and that allow the creation and exchange of user-generated content.”
Politically, numerous factors have led to the protests commonly known as the Arab Spring. These include issues such as dictatorship or absolute monarchy, human rights violations, government corruption, economic decline, unemployment, and extreme poverty. The main user of social media tends to be the large percentage of educated but dissatisfied youth within the effected countries.
Social Media Democracies all demonstrate the use of social media, such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Skype, to organize, communicate, and raise awareness in the face of state attempts at repression and internet censorship.
Thanks for visiting Social Media Democracies.
